LEGOs, LEGOs everywhere…I even have LEGOs in my coffee cup every day. My little ladybird puts one in each morning—with a great deal of exuberance. It is our funny ritual. She goes running to get a LEGO when she first sees me with coffee in hand.
Speaking of LEGOs…dum da da dum, drumroll please….so many people who read this blog or have stopped in for a visit are just here because of the little LEGO sewing machine that I made while daydreaming during a LEGO-building session with the kiddos two years ago (see post here). My little LEGO Bernina gets a lot of love on Pinterest. And my blog analytics tell me that that 3,885 people have looked at that post. Hilarious. It is my number one post. Many people have emailed asking for a tutorial or instructions on how to build it and several bloggers have built their own. I was even commissioned to make one for a complete stranger last summer. (Would you turn down $125?) If only the rest of my business may be as successful and well-loved as this little daydream cast-off!
So, without further adieu…here is the tutorial. Enjoy. I’d love to see what you make. For more LEGO inspiration see my LEGO love page here.
As far as assembling the pieces you will need, take a look at the Parts List and you will find that you probably have most of them already. If you are missing a piece or two, you can buy them online singly.
And just because it seems like a good idea, I should add: LEGO® is a trademark of the LEGO Group of companies which does not sponsor, authorize or endorse this site.
***My little Lego Sewing Machine may just be the little engine that could. Wanna see it produced by LEGO as a kit for sale? Let’s do it! LEGO® CUUSOO is kinda like Kickstarter for supporting potential LEGO projects. You don’t support it with money, just by voting for it!
It is a long shot but then again, I’ve had 6,000 hits on my tutorial in 4 days! Tell all your friends. GO VOTE FOR IT: http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/18230#
Love it! And my 12 year old approves as well. 🙂 That is quite the elaborate tutorial, great job!
I’m so excited! I just purchased that ax on ebay. Except it came in a lot of 25. So I get a Bernina and the kids can play Lego MineCraft!!
thank you thank you thank you 🙂

Love it. Rioght now I can’t even bear to go into my family room there are so many legos everywhere. Printed it out for my son. Is that a droid head posing as a presser foot?
Oh gosh Carrie that is AWESOME! With 3 kiddos I have legos everywhere! I am just going to collect them before vacuuming and making them into sewing machines. Of course mine won’t be pretty white machines, mine will be crazy multicolored machines with a a hodgepodge of spare parts. Maybe I will try my hand a a Lego long arm!
Thank you! Another summer project for my Lego boy! 🙂
🙂 this is completely awesome! I’m going to try it this weekend! We just have an 8th Birthday for my stepson all Lego-ed out 🙂
Ahh!! I want to make this soooo bad – you are brilliant! My fiance has a HUGE stash of legos saved from when he was a child, but sadly, there are none of those 1/4 circle pieces, the piece with the curve. Huge bummer!!
I love it!
I will try to make it tomorrow!
Marie
Had my son fashion one of these for me this morning, out of his vast Lego stash (rivals my sewing stash) just love it! Thanks so much for such a great tutorial!
this is so awesome!! I just convinced my husband to make one for me. I love it (:
I bet Legos would sell even more if these were in their boxes in place of spaceships, etc!
WOW! I’m going to the kid’s Lego box now, to see what I can find. I’ve linked it to my blog too! yellowfibro.blogspot.com.au
You ROCK! I’m gonna get my two girlios on this pronto- thanx ever so much for the parts list 🙂
Just made my Lego machine! Now you need to design a Lego serger! I think those little Lego cones will make great cones of thread for the top of the machine!
or you can sell the extras to us!
You are a genius … thanks for the brilliant tutorial! The children and I will be looking through our Lego stash later for the suitable pieces.
This is AMAZING!! I am going to get my boy to make me one in the morning! Thank you thank you thank you! (p.s also shared on my facebook page to the hoards of sewing (and lego) fans out there!) xxx
Hello, I was sent here by another blogger (Angelfish, http://fiona-staringatthesea.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/friday-find-lego-sewing-machine.html), who has made one of your Sewing Machines!
What a fun project. Lego is definitely something that we have plenty of… Must go and raid the Boy’s room.
Thanks for this – such fun!
Brilliant! Thanks so much for this.
Off to get the lego boxes down out of the loft!

I am definitely sending a link to this page to my son, Dr Simon, who was a Lego nut when he was a pre-schooler,inventing things with his (then very basic!) Lego while I sewed right next to him!!
Thank you SO much for posting the part list and the instructions. I wrote my favorite Lego online supplier (http://www.findmybrick.com) to see if they could sell me the entire set of parts. I told them there is serious interest in making this item, and suggested that if they packaged all these parts and sold them together, that they would sell a TON of them.
Do you drink a coffee with a lego?. LOL
Very interesting tutorial. This is a nice idea. It’s good for the children, one way for them to sharpen their mind. I like this blog.
Impressive!I’ll start making a Lego sewing machine now.Its a nice surprise for my son. Thanks for the tutorial!
I have about LEGO hope you’ll find what they’re looking for Other LEGO set
Love it! Did you know LEGO is an adjective? So it’s LEGO bricks, LEGO sets, LEGO sewing machine and not LEGOs.
Wow, that’s nice instruction and tutorial.
That is hilarious and cute and I’m glad you went to all the trouble to make a tutorial.
thank you love it
How about putting a kit together, women are crazy what they will buy about sewing notions and fun things. Please post me when you have it together and I’ll buy one too. AngelKrusier1@yahoo.com
Too cute… now I know what to do with all the lego blocks my grown son has stored at my house!
OMG! I am going to did through our VERY impressive Lego stash and make this for my sewing room! Just love, love, love it! Thanks for the tutorial … SWEET! May have to make two – one for the shop and another for my sewing room! LOL!! I am 100% confident that I have every part & then some …. maybe even can make one a custom color. HA!
P.S. I saved all my Lego’s for grandkids … my grandson has a ball with them! Don’t throw them out!
Very nice and helpful information has been given in this article. I like the way you explain the things. Keep posting. Thanks!

What a great tutorial! I’m trying to get the parts together, I have them all except for the little red one, the grey one (to put the hammer in) and the white round one (looks like part of a wheel, but it seems bigger)… Can somebody help me with part numbers for those 3 items?

I love Legos and have for a long time. I can see making these for gifts and think the sewing/quilting world would love them. You are very creative!
You have really selected the suitable topic; this is one of my favorite blogs. dating tips for women
Love this post! I am an adult and I still love Legos. There is something really satisfying about sitting down and building something all yours out of a bunch of random blocks. You put Legos in your coffee? I hope you wash it first! Lol!Timepiece Perfection
I love to sew, and came across your article because i was googling for more info on a childs vintage toy sewing machine i just bought, I just had to get all our lego out and start rummaging! With only a couple of modifications i’ve made one for myself, and am now planning to make a slightly bigger version using some gears and things that our lego has! haha, thanks so much – It’ll go on display proudly with my vintage machine 😀
This is so adorable. I remember you had a parts list a while ago, but I can’t find it anywhere. Could you point me to it please. TIA.
awesome!
Man I need to play with my Legos they are up in their tubs….. mmmmm this is awesome I’m a quilter…..
so cool! I’m also looking for the parts list.
sorry if it’s right in front of me!
You keep saying LEGOs. LEGO is plural. One Lego brick, Some LEGO, never ever LEGOs. Would you say Mices? Mooses? Geeses? Exactly. Then you wouldn’t say LEGOs.
I love this, it’s funny I just picked up one of those axes on the floor of my bedroom, who know’s what child brought it in there.
This is awesome! I wonder where, if anywhere, can I download a proper jpg of the box packaging?
LEGO could make a lot of money if they sold a kit.
could you send me a list of all the part numbers ? having a hard time finding all of them !!!
