Lego Chess game

Lotso vs Yeti in a game of speed chess! I couldn’t help myself. It is rather tricky to make a tiny chess board from Legos and I hope to make a more elaborate version one day. The bishops have antennas…or is it antennae? The knights look rather horsey, so that is good. But the pawns are too short.

One Family, One Meal

If there are six billion people on the planet and half are women, then it is safe to say that there are 1 billion women on this earth who are currently keeping house (or hut) with their mate (or sans a mate) and maybe raising children. Some of these women have jobs, some don’t. Some have plumbing, some don’t. Some go to grocery stores for food, some slaughter goats in the dirt yard. Some have thick, taupe wall-to-wall carpet, some have compacted mud floors. But all keep house. All sweep. All cook. Many tend to kids. Every day. I jokingly refer to this as the Housewife Olympics. And I not-so-jokingly say that I am not doing very well in the Housewife Olympics. read more

Thoughts on Blogher ’11

Just got back from the blogging convention in San Diego (that was the Lede). I experienced a lot and most, not all, of it was good (that was the Hook). But met lots of cool, smart, savvy women and there was loads of energy and buzz. My pretension meter did go off a few times, however. And I was aware that “savvy” sometimes goes hand in hand with “weary.” But there was so much to learn and many kind women to chat up. For example, I learned about the basic format of journalistic writing–Lede, Hook, Nut graph, Kicker (this is the Nut Graph). Here are some more things I gleaned:

Long Beach International Quilt Festival 2011

What a lot of fun! We just returned from the Long Beach Quilt Festival.We met so many lovely people during the show and I want to say thank you to all of our new friends! To quote Fillmore in the Cars movie, “there’s a lot of love out there, man.” My mom wins the prize for Best Mom Ever for schlepping and promoting and climbing on chairs to hang stuff. We met so many cool, kind, and talented women including many from the LA Modern Quilt Guild. read more
