Wonky Little Houses :: Classroom

Today, I taught my Wonky Houses pattern over here. I swear I learn WAY more from my students than they do from me…but we all have a good time. Every time I teach I am amazed by people’s innate talent, and their spunk, willingness, and creativity. The best part is seeing each person’s vision. Every single Wonky House quilt is completely unique and a reflection of its maker. No matter what me make, it always becomes a self-portrait– but this is especially true in sewing. In four hours, most people only finished two or three houses so these are very much in progress. Just look at what these women (and one girl) created. We had sisters, a mother and daughter…it was a really fun day… read more

Lemonade Stand

The big boy played hookie from school today because I was too lazy to actually get him there on time. It was an unusual choice.

We wandered into our neighbor’s yard and just happened to have a big box with us. (That is something that would never happen to an adult: having a big empty box in your hands for no reason whatsoever. But kids are masters at carrying things to and fro). The big boy started gathering all the lemons beneath the lemon tree. It smelled so good under there. The exotic perfume of lemon and orange blossoms always makes me feel as if I live in a magical far-off land. But that same smell is the harbinger of the intense desert heat to come. It is bittersweet and too short lived. read more

Exciting news…

Kathy Mack’s Market Tote…her pattern is coming out soon!

Kathy Mack’s Mail Sack pattern.

Since returning to sewing nearly two years ago, one of my favorite places to visit online is Pink Chalk Fabrics. The owner of Pink Chalk, Kathy Mack, seems like such a lovely woman. She’s the kind of woman you just want to know- interesting and cool, but also normal and down-to-earth. When not blogging, sewing and running her shop, she designs patterns. Her sensibility is really fresh and clean. Her blog is fun and inspiring. I have long been drooling over her Mail Sack and Market Tote patterns and I have learned a lot looking at her perfect crisp points and helpful tutorials.

I sent Kathy an email telling her about my new line of patterns and I was so excited and honored when she actually placed an order. So here they are…my patterns on her site…click here to go see. Forgive me for sharing…I know this is only exciting to me…but I am so happy and grateful. read more

First patterns…first giveaway!

I am trying to write this post but I keep deleting the whole thing because I have no words (ah hem…for once.) I think the pictures above speak more clearly than I can (also a first!)

I have officially published the first-ever sewing patterns for two of my designs. It was a lot of work and it took a village. I am so grateful to the amazing friends I have in my life who helped me with the graphic design, photography, editing, and proofing of my patterns. I am absolutely excited beyond words. (Flip, Lisa, Cyndi, Val, Jill and Sarah…thank you for your help!) read more

a butterfly flaps its wings in Japan…

photo by Howard Jones

9,500 people missing from just one town. I am stunned…saddened…speechless. Watching images of the power of the sea and the earth makes me feel humble to say the least…but nauseated is mor apt. Really, there are no words for it…fear, panic, shock, pain…these words seem weightless in comparison to the events in Japan. Our hearts break for the Japanese people and also for ourselves–for the horrible loss of even a single human life, let alone thousands. read more

The things they say

We had one of those talks today…you know…those “I-need-you-to-listen-to-me-because-you-are-not-too-young-to-understand-the-meaning-of-the-word-respect” talks. I was talking to the big boy about not using his water bottle as a g u n at school. And about not using that insolent tone with me or his elders…and I was saying it is disrespectful and it can hurt a person’s feelings and blah, blah, blah…mwah, mwah, mwah, wahwah, wah (insert Charlie Brown grown-up trumpet voice here.) read more
