I have a new friend. She is my first-ever Twitter-born friend—Shelly Figueroa, of Figgy’s Patterns. I’m sure you already know who she is, because she is incredible and her children’s wear sewing patterns are exquisite. You can see them here.

The Zephyr Romper :: optional sundress pattern |
So when my winningly warm and talented new friend asked me to be a part of a blog tour promoting her new online class for Craftsy, I had to say yes, regardless of the state of my laundry room, the pile of work I have to do, and did I mention I am designing a line of fabric? I have never made one of Shelly’s patterns, but have admired them from afar and so I couldn’t wait to have her personally guide me through it with the fab Craftsy video tutorial platform.
And, the cool thing is that Craftsy is giving my readers a 50% discount on this amazing Kids Romper Revamp class! Use the code here to sign up and claim your discount.
The video format is easy and extremely helpful. Also, there is an interactive feature that allows students to directly ask questions in a sidebar dialogue. Very cool. As for Shelly’s Kids Romper Revamp class, Shelly is so thorough in her video tutorial. She offered great tips on taking your child’s measurements, a lesson in interfacings, techniques for sewing with knits, etc. I learned a lot. Did you know Shelly is a fifth-generation seamstress?
Anyway, I packed up the kids for a few hours and managed to make this precious, minimal dress that is kinda-sorta the Zephyr sundress bonus pattern, but we can call it the busy-working-non-nanny-having-mama’s-zephyr-sundress-workaround! haha! Mine is a minimal frock, in color and construction, as I added no buttons or closures (just one solid yoke). And it fits my ladybird like it was made for her. Oh, wait…it was made for her…based on her exact measurements! It will look cute with an aqua cardigan from the Gap, dark grey leggings, and her Hello Kitty shoes.
I made my braided straps using strips of recycled silk saris from Leilani Arts. I wanted them to be mismatched to create an artful, urchin feeling.

Here is my very quick, but still cool version of the Zephyr sundress. Next time, I will make the yoke contrasting and add the button closure. |
love the straps!!! and the linen is perfection 🙂
