Pinhead Pincushion pattern available over at GenerationQ Magazine. |
She’s kinda cute and kinda tough–
totally spunky, craft-punky and rad.
She’s bad-ass and adorable–
my little punk rock girl.
I sketched this idea for a pincushion two years ago on a napkin.
I was pondering pins and pincushions and it occurred to me that the pins could be piercings.
Now, I’m not a pierced person myself–other than the obligatory (and short-lived) double left-ear-pierced phase in college…which I might need to revisit ;)…but my husband was all pierced-up when we met…
…so anyway, my little punk rock girl isn’t a self portrait, but I think I am in love with her.
When the hip, new modern sewing magazine, GenerationQ, asked me to submit a project, you can imagine that I thought of her right away. She’s featured in the new issue (Fall 2012). They named her the Pinhead Pincushion, which I just love. The pattern is available on the GenQ website here for you to download. They even created a flickr group to showcase what you make!
Some of my ideas are so weird, that I’m not sure if they are good or not–but I hope you like her as much as I do. Oh, and yes, that is blush on her cheeks…what? She needed a little color!
Anyway, leave a comment by August 23rd about your double left-ear-piercing phase (or some other phase) or your favorite pincushion and I’ll draw two lucky winners to receive the new GenerationQ Magazine!
How did you know I have a double left ear piercing? It was done on a dare after several Margharitas on my 40th birthday, LOL. Picking a favorite pincushion would be like choosing a favorite child. yours is darling
I didn’t really go through a phase like that but have a friend that described a high school friend that loved her even when she had a shaved head- only half her head. I’d love to see the new GenQ magazine with your pattern. Thanks for the giveaway.
Three in my left and one in my right! A 90’s gal. I only wear one and one but maybe I’ll add back one more on the one side. 🙂
I love this. So fun. You never need to second guess yourself..you are awesome!
90’s gal 😉 me too, i suppose… i have two in each ear and very rarely wear any. there was a short lived cartlidge piercing in 96 but that’s long gone. really, i always wanted my eyebrows pierced. ha!
Back (back!) in the day, I had 14 in my left and…I forget how many in my right. 5 or so. Plus nose and nipple. These days…only the two plain rings in my ears are left. Still have pink hair though!
So tame in comparison to you all! I have 1 piercing in each ear but they involved my cousin holding an ice cube to the back of the ear and pushing a needle thru it… 2 holes were more than enough for me with that method!
My parents absolutely FORBID me to have my ears pierced more than once – this was very tough considering I was a teenager in the late 80’s90s and all my friends had a ton. I WAS DEPRIVED.
I’ve only a single set of piercings in my ears… more than enough for me!! LOL But I LOVE pincushions… the more creative the better (which is odd because I rarely use the pins I put in them!!) Most of the ones I have made are of different food items! Love this creative bit of fun! Something totally different!
I used a nerf foam dart as a pin cushion the other day. I like yours much better. Yes, I remember having a second pierce in one year long ago. Congrats on the magazine feature!
Now come enter my cereal giveaway (pretty please)!
I got the second piercing in both ears in the ninth grade, after convincing my parents it wouldn’t look gaudy. Then I stopped wearing them and had the left ear repierced while living in NOLA in the mid-nineties by a very cool woman in the French Quarter who had the coolest tattoos I’d ever seen. Then again, I quit wearing them. Now, in celebration of turning 40, I am thinking of getting it done again and actually wearing it this time for a while. Anyway, very cute pincushion and thanks, as always, for your creative, inspiring ideas!
Hahaha! I love her! I met you at the quilt festival in Long Beach & I just LOVE your work!!! I got a bunch of extra ear piercings on my left side. Top & bottom of my ear! I couldnt afford to get it done professionally, so I used a needle, ice & a potatoe. My poor little sister. I talked her into letting me pirce her ears, too!
